A look at the rise of women’s sports in video games, the progress that’s been made so far, and the further work that needs to be done to help push women’s sport forward in the future.
NBA 2K22 will feature a female cover star in Chicago Sky’s Candace Parker, EA PGA Tour will be adding female golfers and golf tournaments when it launches in 2022, and FIFA has also made some major steps forward this year, allowing you to create and use female pros in Pro Clubs as well as naming Alex Scott as the first English speaking female commentator in FIFA history.
Sports Interactive meanwhile have announced that they’ve already started work on a multi-year project to integrate women’s football into Football Manager, and overall there are definitely some positive signs of a brighter video game future for women in sport.
Despite the positive steps that have very definitely been taken, however, there’s still plenty more that can be done, and plenty of scope for sports game developers to shine an even stronger spotlight on women’s sport in the future.
