Upcoming free-to-play football video game GOALS has scored $20M in Series A financing, bringing the total funding to $39M as the team behind the game seeks to revolutionise a football genre seen by many to be on a seriously downwards trajectory.
GOALS founder Andreas Thorstensson had the following to say about the origins of the title:
GOALS was born out of our passion for football, our passion for video games and our opinion that football video games have grown stale… There are over 3.5 billion football fans in the world, and our team is united in the belief that a football game done right should be the world’s biggest video game. We’re focused on making sure we have a game that meets the needs of every fan, whether they’re looking for casual or highly competitive play, what hardware they play on, no matter where they live.
GOALS is currently at its pre-alpha stage, but there’s extreme ambition behind the title here as they look not just to compete in the football video game space, but breathe fresh life and energy into it as they seek to serve up a game that’s built for esports, with cross-play functionality across consoles and PC.
